The Protein Shift Innovation Platform brings together researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers to accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and diverse protein sources. Through our projects, we explore novel food innovations, consumer acceptance, circular food systems, and new protein technologies; all within planetary boundaries. Optimized Meals for Health and Sustainability.png

This project aims to address the conflict between creating climate-friendly meals and ensuring sufficient iron bioavailability, especially for vulnerable groups. Through a mapping of existing methods for calculating nutrient density, bioavailability, and carbon footprint, we are developing a prototype in the form of a framework that helps companies create nutritious and climate-smart meals.

 

The project contributes to ensuring that the transition to more plant-based food options does not lead to nutritional deficiencies, which is crucial for a sustainable and healthy future in line with the innovation platforms 9outof10 and PUSH missions.

This project aims to establish climate-friendly purchasing levels for food within public and private meal organizations, helping them set and achieve both short- and long-term climate goals. The goal is to develop relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) that can be used as guidelines to assess progress towards global climate goals and ensure climate sustainability in food procurement.

 

The project's potential for climate transition is especially significant in relation to the "protein shift" mission, and it will complement the mission "9 out of 10 meals consumed in Sweden by 2040 are within planetary boundaries.”

This project explores the Universal Basic Nutrient Income (UBNI), an innovative framework grounded in Sweden’s welfare system that aims to address dietary inequality, strengthen local food systems, and reduce dependency on vulnerable import chains. By establishing nutrition as a basic right, UBNI empowers individuals to make healthy dietary choices and supports local producers in the transition to sustainable practices. The project proposes a new model to bridge socioeconomic gaps in health and promote food security and resilience amid climate change.

 

By reframing nutrition as a fundamental right, UBNI aligns with the 9outof10 platform to create a system that actively encourages sustainable choices, supports local farmers, and ensures everyone can access healthy, eco-friendly food.

Integrated into the speculative UBNI program, this model reimagines food as a tool for health, using nutrition as both a preventative measure and a treatment for various medical conditions. By aligning healthy eating with healthcare, it aims to reduce the need for expensive medical interventions, lower healthcare costs, and improve public health outcomes.

 

 

The model will be tested in a small scale in real-world settings to provoke discussions about how this model could proactively work to impact citizents dietary choices to prevent diet-related diseases, enhance patient recovery, and reduce the overall burden on healthcare systems.

Speculative design project:

UBNI - Work for food

The "Work for Food" model, as part of the speculative UBNI design, reimagines the relationship between work, food, and urban living. In response to Sweden's vulnerabilities in food security and climate change, this initiative allows employees to trade one workday each month for a "Work for Food" focused on sustainable food practices. Participants can engage in activities like cultivating community gardens, supporting urban farms, and learning about local food systems.

 

By directly involving citizens in food production, the program fosters resilience, strengthens community ties, and builds a more self-sufficient local food network. This prototype will be tested in Malmö to spark discourse on new participatory models, community engagement, food security, and urban sustainability.

The work for food model connects to the 9outof10 mission through sugggesting new participatory models increasing both local self sufficiency, food system preparedness and allocates time and workforce for implementing regenerative practices.
